the divine one

They called her "The Divine One". One critic said she had "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century." But away from the limelight, jazz legend Sarah Vaughan suffered through several abusive relationships and battled with record companies that tried to control her. In the end, Vaughan sang the songs she wanted, adding to her immense appeal and becoming popular not just in the US - but Europe, Brazil and Japan. Sadly, Sarah Vaughan was a heavy smoker and developed lung cancer. She spent many trips to the hospital for chemotherapy but decided it was too much and asked to be taken home, dying there a short time later at age 66 in 1990. You can hear the incredible Sarah Vaughan here on Jazz Diva Radio.
